Recently, Google Play took action against several apps in India, including some well-established ones, for allegedly evading payment fees despite benefiting from the platform. Among the affected apps were 99acresNaukri.com, and Shaadi.com. In a blog post, Google said 10 Indian companies had chosen for an extended period of time not to pay for the “immense value they receive on Google Play”. Google’s decision to remove these apps stemmed from its allegation that these companies had not complied with payment policies. Despite facing criticism, Google reinstated some apps, including Shaadi.comInfo Edge’s Naukri99acres,Shiksha.com,Naukri Recruiter, Naukrigulf Job Search App and NaukriGulf, Bharat Matrimony  However, many others remain delisted.

The dispute is over Google imposing a fee of 11-26% on in-app payments after anti-competition body CCI ordered scrapping of an earlier system of charging 15-30%.

Google went ahead to remove the apps not paying the fee after the Supreme Court did not provide interim relief to companies behind these apps in their battle against the search giant’s platform fees.

  • Info Edge founder Sanjeev Bikhchandani on Friday said it had cleared all pending Google invoices in a timely manner and was compliant with its policies.

    “Indian companies will comply – for now. But what India needs is an App Store/ Play Store that is a part of Digital Public Infrastructure – like UPI and ONDC. The response needs to be strategic,” he said in a post on X tagging Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and his office.

  1. Shaadi.com: The popular matrimonial platform was temporarily removed from the Play Store but has now been restored.

  3. NaukriGulf: Another job search platform by Info Edge that was affected by the app removal but has since been reinstated.
  4. Kuku FM: A six-year-old audio platform hosting books and podcasts in multiple languages. It was removed but is now back on the Play Store.
